What are the best pocket/utility knives?

Posted: April 26th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Questions | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , | 5 Comments »

I know of the big companies; cold steel, spyderco, benchmade, kershaw, gerber. Are there any other quality knife makers that I am forgetting?

What companies in your opinions make the best overall practical, camping and heavy duty knives? Best bang for your buck? Cheapest but well made? Best service and warranty? The blade will hold up to constant use and/or is easy to sharpen or the company will do it for you free/cheap?

I have two kershaws and I like them. Cheap and reliable and I have not yet to have any problems with them. One is a Ken Onion chive (great little pocket knife).

I am looking for something along the lines of a legal pocket knife in california ( I believe the blade has to be under 2 3/4") and something no bigger than say a six inch blade. Folding or not.

You are going to get lots of different opinions on this so here’s mine. For folding pocket knives SOG is great, also their multitools are top notch.

For camping, if you want a heavy duty general purpose knife, get the KaBar. It’s good for chopping and other heavy uses, if you don’t have a hand axe.

The very best all around knife in the world, in my opinion, is the Frosts Mora, either the clipper or the classic. Under 20.00. Triple laminate steel. You can pound them into a tree and stand on the handle. They are that tough. The steel holds and edge. Considering the cost, strength, quality and workmanship, the Frost Mora is top notch.

I have a few knives made by CRKT- in my opinion they make the best knives. Chick out the "K.I.S.S." and the "Urban Shark".

I carry a Gerber Para-Frame I, the Para-frame series is one of my favorites. But what used to be the best knives in the whole world was Old Timer Knives until they moved overseas (WHY!?!?!) and now their made in China or some other place where they assemble cheap products with cheap materials.
