Your mind is the greatest self defense weapon you have. lose the knife. A weapon is a hindrance and forces you to a limited range of defenses. It can to the untrained give you confidence to get in over your head. It takes years of training to be proficient with a knife and even than most of the martial artist I know prefer the open hand.

The best defense is avoidance. For this the mind is an excellent tool.

I agree with SiFu Frank, the mind is the greatest self defense tool. Allow your mind to cause you to use you bike to escape safely without fighting.

Problem with people who carry the self defense weapon is that people who carry them don’t really train or even think about how they will take those weapons out. If you are going to carry a defensive weapon you need to be aware of how you will take that weapon out, how you will pull it out under sudden pressure, then how you will neutralize the initial threat to employing the weapon. (Learing in that order not excuted in that order) Then there is the fact that good amount of those weapons requires proper training before being able to use them very well. (Which might not be nessary, but if use very wrong you might be handing a weapon to your attacker.) So sometimes emptyhanded or found improv weapon (rocks, big sticks, etc.) might be better than a weapon you can’t take out or will lose possesion of and end up giving the weapon to the other person.

    With that said.
Knife is a weapon that is hard to take away and is very effective even in novice’s hands. However, the employing of the weapon requires skill (take out and unfold/undo hold mechanism and unsheith) and the damage the weapon inflicts is extreme. What might have started as self-defense might not be seen as one in court if you ever had to use it.

Taser, I’m not too familiar with. I know what it is, but the operation of it is a bit lost to me. I think it shoots these to conductors to the attacker and sticks on somehow to do an electrical shock right? It requires aiming which means it’ll be hard to use in close quarters which a confrontation will be. It’s pretty easy to misdirect and take away. Employing it is easyer than a knife and the damage is not so extreme as well. Overall, it’s better in the eyes of the court, but you’ll have to train yourself to use it effectively.

Baton is pretty much harder to use but less extreme knife. If it’s life or death I want knife, if it’s stupid bullies that might leave me in a lot of bruises then I want a baton. But please note that baton is the easiest to take away from you on this list. That means without proper training that weapon might easily be used against you.

I recommend pepper spray. It’s kinda hard to take away a weapon that fits right into your hand like pepper spray does. very effective in novice’s hands, almost no training required. (Almost no aiming required, and multiple or prolonged shots) employing the weapon is really easy if you have it cliped on or on a chain that you can pull on. And the damage the weapon inflicts will be non permanent and the court will be very understanding in the use of this weapon above all other ones.

The best is to be able to resist with bare hands because you know you will always have it and you need to neutralize the initial attack anyway to use these weapons. which requires a certain level of empty hand skills. But I still think court will be more understanding of the pepper spray to the face than elbow to the nose…

As long as you only use it for self defense then its alright to me.

A pocket knife is easier to hold though so a baton is out. Pepper spray works great but you will be risking your own eyes aswell so thats out. A Taser is great but you have to buy one with adult supervision atleast so thats out.

You can use anything as a weapon really. A stick can be used as a weapon. Your bike can be a weapon or a key or even a keychain can be used as a weapon. So can a roll of paper.

    Hi,
are you asking the correct question? You are asking what, but you should be saying which item is best used for self defence? Maybe you should be asking "Which weapon will put me in jail the quickest"

Most things are illegal for you to carry. I suggest a pepper spray as there are no laws in most places for people under 18 and they are very effective. Knives & Batons = bad idea. If you would kill someone by accident at your age, you have too much to loose. Spray them in the face and run is the best way to go for self defense. Pick a pepper spray that is best for you. A great link below to find one that will work in your situation.
