I need a single blade, durable, pocket knife.

Personally I think customer service is a fairly important part of the equation in finding the best pocket knife. For all the criteria involved, I’d put my money on Benchmade. If you’re not looking for an opening-assisted knife, have a look at the Benchmade Griptilian. They’re amazing knives and I can’t speak highly enough of them.

I have many of each brand you listed. The SOG’s I have, I’ve determined the blades are a little thin. They hold an edge well, but don’t stand up well to heavy use that well. I’ve broken two and never cut anything it wasn’t supposed to cut. The lockup on any I’ve felt has never been 100% either.

I like Kershaw blades and they hold their edges well, but overall I prefer the heft, grip, and steel of a proper Benchmade knife (Blue box). The only Benchmade knives I couldn’t recommend would be their Red Box class; they retail for $50 or less and are made in Taiwan. They are inferior to the Blue Box knives in every way and I couldn’t recommend one at all.

Benchmade is best hands down, but for the price, Remington has a new series of tactical folders which seem pretty nice.

Benchmade(I’ve only had Blue Box line knives none of the Red Box ones), Spyderco, Cold Steel & Kershaw have all been good to me. My father has a couple of SOG lockblades he’s pretty happy with.

My top choice is the Benchmade but they are also generally more expensive then the other brands.

All three are good manufacturers which I have knives from. I also have a Ka-Bar folder (MULE Folder, Straight Edge) which is nice and did not cost me a lot. My backup is a Kershaw Chive, a very small lever knife that I carry on my belt behind my Blackberry/

My daily carry knife for years has been a Benchmade CQC7. It has served me well since the mid 90s. I have a Benchmade 530 which my children gave as a gift. It is a nice knife that is in today’s lineup. The 580 will be my next purchase.

If you have the money to spend Benchmade is the way to go.

Each of them make some good knives. If price is no object I would go with a Benchmade or an SOG. I really like the SOG vulcan–a manual knife that is extremely sturdy and well built. I got mine from the guys listed below and they were very helpful and had very fast, free shipping.
