In this review, I examine and compare the Victorinox Fireman and Hiker Swiss Army knives, also called SAKs. They are similar in tools but not in size and both are great for their intended purposes.
i bought a Swiss Army knife while i was in Switzerland for vacation. now, i have frequently used it during fishing, camping and other outdoor activities. usually i never have it on me unless its been specifically packed into my gear for these types of situations. however, i have also found myself in UNplanned situations where having it would have been very convenient, only i DIDNT have it on me.
so i was wondering if it is legally ok to have it in my car for the off chance ill need it.
ive been looking up local knife laws and length restrictions and its all very confusing. i also would like an answer that specifically deals with Swiss Army knives and not other types of knives.
Me and my best friends are really into camping and survival stuff. My uncle owns tons of land where we can go and theres nobody for like 100 miles. Well the plan is to go to one of these places, and all we start with is a pocket knife, and an ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY ONLY cell phone. My parents are fine with it as long as we promise to call if theres a big problem. We will have to make our own clothes, temporary houses, find food, water etc. We know lots of techniques and survival stuff, even though we are all only 14. The only things my parents are worried about is freezing on the first night, since we dont have any clothes, or a tent to start off, but we assured them that we will keep warm. Is this a good idea?
In 1897 the Original Swiss Army Knife was created in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. The Swiss Army Pocket Tool Kit is just that – a veritable tool kit that fits in your pocket. It’s the perfect traveler’s companion especially for those exploring the great outdoors. The VICTORINOX “Swiss Army Knife” is over 100 Years Old. This useful pocket Multi-Tool was legally registered on June 12, 1897. Over 34,000 of these pocket tools with the distinctive Swiss cross leave the factory in central Switzerland each day. Ninety per cent are for export to over 100 different countries and serve as ambassadors for Switzerland.
After an unparalleled success story around the world, the VICTORINOX “Swiss Army Knife” is even orbiting the earth as part of the standard equipment of the Space Shuttle Crew. The knife has also been successfully proven on expeditions: in the arctic ice of the North Pole; on the highest peak on earth, Mount Everest; in the tropical rain forests of the Amazon, and elsewhere. Time and again, it has been a life saver in situations of extreme danger and great need. The New York Museum of Modern Art and the State Museum for Applied Art in Munich have selected it for their collections of excellence in design, and, since Lyndon B. Johnson, US presidents present guests with VICTORINOX pocket knives.

I do not need it for my occupation. I’m a male in my 20s. I’d use it for hiking/camping, mostly.
I also may use it as a stop-gap replacement for a full set of tools at times. (I’m an expat that moves a lot, and can’t lug around a toolbox. I say "may" because I might be moving back to the U.S. soon and would have more tools.)
I guess I should have waited and purchased the knife I really wanted…but this was a great deal! A very good knife overall. Maybe not the best choice for EDC.
An overview of the Victorinox Swiss Army Trekker. At first glance I wrote this knife off & wasn’t interested, but was swayed by RBcarnuts’ comments on it. This knife packs alot of great features in a single handed opener from Victorinox, yes that’s right they’ve come out with a single handed opener. It opens easily, but if you’re a righty you’ll need both hands to close it. The Trekker cover alot of utility & I’m a fan.
I know of the big companies; cold steel, spyderco, benchmade, kershaw, gerber. Are there any other quality knife makers that I am forgetting?
What companies in your opinions make the best overall practical, camping and heavy duty knives? Best bang for your buck? Cheapest but well made? Best service and warranty? The blade will hold up to constant use and/or is easy to sharpen or the company will do it for you free/cheap?
I have two kershaws and I like them. Cheap and reliable and I have not yet to have any problems with them. One is a Ken Onion chive (great little pocket knife).
I am looking for something along the lines of a legal pocket knife in california ( I believe the blade has to be under 2 3/4") and something no bigger than say a six inch blade. Folding or not.
